Demonstration of Competency Process

The Demonstration of Competency stage is a critical part of the BEFA Certification, as it ensures that applicants have the skills and knowledge required to meet the Canadian Standard of Competency for Architects. It is essential that applicants demonstrate proficiency in all competency categories, as successful completion of each is required to progress to the next stage of the program and ultimately move toward licensure in Canada.

We encourage you to consult the demonstration of competency resources, where you will find a step-by-step flow chart and examples illustrating each competency category.

Step 1: Document Submission

Applicants must submit documentation to demonstrate their competencies in twelve categories that reflect the architect’s role throughout an entire project.

All required documents for the completeness check must be submitted within twelve (12) months of payment for this stage. If the submission is incomplete, you will be notified and must resubmit all required materials before advancing to Step 2.

Required Documentation

The specific documents required will vary depending on your experience and the projects you select to illustrate your competencies. We encourage you to review the available resources for examples of documents you may submit.

The more specific and relevant your submissions are, the easier it will be for your assessor to recognize your competency in each category.

The twelve (12) categories include:

  1. Programming
  2. Site and Environmental Analysis
  3. Schematic Design
  4. Engineering Systems (Structural, Mechanical, Electrical, and Civil)
  5. Building Cost Analysis
  6. Code Research
  7. Design Development
  8. Construction Documents
  9. Procurement and Contract Award
  10. Construction Phase
  11. Management of the Project
  12. Professionalism and Professional Practice

Step 2: Review

Once the submission is complete, the application may proceed to the Panel Chair for review.  The Chair may recommend full panel review or request additional information or clarifications which would require the applicant to resubmit the necessary materials.

Step 3: Panel Recommendation

After review, the panel makes a recommendation on whether the file can proceed to the Interview.

If the panel determines that additional information is required, the applicant must resubmit the necessary materials before moving forward.
